Grace vs Works?

This week as I read the Bible God was speaking to me about grace.

A familiar word and concept for most – but even as mature Christians we can get stuck in “God loves me the more I do for him”.

I want to encourage you today that we cannot be 90% righteous, or 50% righteous if we had a bad day!

God forgave us 100% yesterday, today and forever through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

Ephesians 2:8-10 puts it like this,

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—

9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Here are 3 things we need to understand this week

1. We Are Saved By Grace Not Works

What we do is not bad, in fact hopefully it is good, but our actions are not what saves us.

It is our faith in Jesus – grace – which brings us forgiveness.

So let’s stop beating ourselves up for not being good enough or not “perfect”.

2. Grace Is A Gift

Some people (like me) find it hard to receive gifts.

I am not looking for a handout, I don’t get my value from gifts, and my usual thinking is that if I want something I would work hard to get it.

Grace is the opposite of that!

We need to learn (and relearn) the art of receiving the gift of grace.

It seems unbelievable that we can just receive this incredible gift – but I believe as we just say “thank you”, it helps us lay down any pride and we understand there is nothing I could have done to receive Jesus’ gift of forgiveness and eternal life.

3. Grace Gives Us Power To Do Good Works

Grace is not finished there!

As we walk in grace – it helps us do do even more good works!

Wait a second – aren’t works bad?

No! There is just an order, 1st we receive salvation through grace, and then that very same grace enables us and equips us to do even more for God’s kingdom!

If you are felling not good enough, or that you are not doing enough, or guilty about messing up, let’s reset by saying ”thank you” to Jesus for his grace.

Get back to the simple idea that there is nothing greater than forgiveness and eternal life.

And from there I believe that grace will naturally flow through us and result in us doing many amazing things for Jesus!

I hope this has been encouraging and feel there are some people reading or watching that need to hear the voice of the Father saying “well done my son” or “well done my daughter”, “I’m proud of you”.

We can’t wait to see you at Church on Sunday either online or in person at connect groups.

Let’s continue to live in Grace!
